This is a great Ethernet cord, especially for the price that i paid for! This product was only $2.50 but not only that, it came with 2 Ethernet cords and i only thought it was only going to include 1. I was almost going to spend $20 on the same type and length Ethernet cord as this one. I use this Ethernet cord for my Xbox Live connection and i never lag. So overall i would HIGHLY recommend this product mainly because it works, the bargain prize, and it comes with 2 Ethernet cords.

Understanding Your PC Cables And Connection Types

The beginning

A classification for networks:

1. Peer-to-peer networks;

2. Server-based networks.

At least two computers form a peer-to-peer network. In a peer-to-peer network there are no dedicated servers, and the there is no hierarchy between computers - all the computers are equal. That's why its name is peer-to-peer network.

Every computer in this network is a client and a server in the same time. It is obvious that in this type of networks you won't find an administrator. Every user must take care of his/her computer - he/she is user and administrator for his/her machine.

This kind of network is cheaper than the server based network. You realized you don't have to buy a system and make it a server in this network. Maybe you need to know what a server is. A server is a dedicated machine, that isn't used like a client and that responds to clients requests. A server-based network is more secure than peer-to-peer, that's why if security is an important factor, you'll have to implement a server-based network.

Topology

This term is referring to spatial disposal of the computers in a network. Later on, I'll explain only the most important topologies and their characteristics, without giving details and explanations about the transfer of data in a network.

If your network computers are tied one after another and they are connected to one single cable, this topology is BUS. This is the simplest method of connecting computers to a network.

Another topology is STAR. In this example, all the computers in the network are connected to a central device, named HUB. A characteristic to this topology, which I have to mention, is that one of the network computers crashes, the other systems aren't affected, and the network is still employable. The HUB status must be ok, because the network performance depends on it.

RING topology is that where the computers are connected to a cable that forms a closed loop. This example doesn't have free terminals, and all the systems are regenerating the signal. The signal goes trough all the computers in this loop that's why when one of the systems breaks down the network doesn't work.
There are combined topologies used now, like: BUS-STAR, RING-STAR.

Cable types
You'll definitely need a cable, so the most used cables are:

- Coaxial cables;

- Twisted cables;

- Optic fiber cables.

Thin coaxial cable (10Base2)This is the cable used for TV's. Everybody must know which is that, so the details are useless.

The signals goes approximately 180 meters trough this cable. They usually use it for the BUS networks. It has a thickness for about 6mm and it is a cheap cable.

Thick coaxial cable (10Base5)

The difference between thick and thin coaxial cable is obvious the diameter. In the thin coaxial cable case we can see the thickness is no more than 6mm. The thick one is approximately 12mm. It can be used for bigger networks, so it can connect computers that are at an approximately 500 meters distance in between. This kind of cable is usually used as the main cable for a BUS network.

The connectors for coaxial cables are BNC (British Naval Connectors). There are 3 types of BNC that are used to build a network with coaxial cable.
The needs for a functioning BUS network are: a BNC, a BNC T (it connects the network device to the coaxial cable) and a terminator to indicate an extremity to the network.

Twisted cables (UTP or STP) (10BaseT)

You don't know which is the unshielded twisted cable? Then you must look at the cable that connects your phone to your modem, if you have something like this.
The connector for this cable is RJ-11 and it is used to four wires twisted cables. In a network the RJ-45 is used. This connector contains connections for 8 wires.
There are two types of twisted cables:

o Unshielded Twisted Pair - UTP (unshielded twisted cable)

o Shielded Twisted Pair - STP (shielded twisted cable)

The UTP cable is cheaper than STP cable, which has a protective shield that protects the transmitted data by eventually interferences.Optic fiber cable

The last important cable type is optic fiber cable, which is the most expensive.
Why is it expensive? The answer is obvious after you'll see its properties. Optic fiber cable can be used on 2000 meters distances without the need of a repertory. This cable isn't affected by interferences and it can send the data with greater than 100Mbps, or even 1Gbps speeds.
A core, glass reinforcement and a protective shell make the optic fiber cable.
Just one fiber can't assure a double senses transmission, that's why an optic fiber cable is formed by two fibers.

What about the network architectures?

Two of the most important architectures for a network are Ethernet and Token Ring.
Ethernet is without a question the most popular network architecture at this moment.
This architecture uses the BUS topology and can be used to transmit data at 10Mbps and 100Mbps, because of the 100 BaseXEthernet (or, usually named Fast Ethernet).
In this architecture the most often used topology is the BUS, but we can use the BUS-STAR topology.
This architecture uses coaxial cables and UTP cables.

The transfer speeds of data are grouped in four standards created by IEEE (stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) for greater than 10Mbps speeds and two standards for 100Mbps.

o 10Base2 refers to an Ethernet network that uses the thin coaxial cable.

o 10Base5 refers to an Ethernet network that uses the thick coaxial cable.

o 10BaseT refers to an Ethernet network that uses UTP cables to connect the computers.

o 10BaseFL refers to an Ethernet network that uses optic fiber cable.

o 100Base VG - Any LAN Ethernet.

o 100BaseX Ethernet
Another architecture may be Token Ring architecture. It can reach a transfer rate of data for about 16 Mbps. This architecture is not so frequent like the Ethernet architecture.
Some of its characteristics are: RING-STAR topology, STP or UTP cables and 4 to 16 Mbps transfer rates.

DIY Ethernet Splitter - How to Build and Use Your Very Own Ethernet Splitter Cable

Ethernet splitters are a great way to reduce the amount of network cable you have in your house and save money. Splitters work by simply allowing two lanes of traffic to travel down an ethernet cable. Ethernet cables only use 4 out of the 8 wires they have when sending and receiving data. A splitter makes it possible for you to force two lanes of traffic down one cable. This allows you to almost halve the amount of cable between to network connections by using one cable instead of two. If you want to make your own ethernet cable splitter then the good news is that they are actually very cheap and anyone should be able to construct one without any outside help. If you are up for the challenge then here is what you need to do to make your own splitter.

The main components of the splitter are very basic and extremely cheap. It shouldn't cost anymore than a few dollars to get everything you need. The parts that you will need include two RJ45 crimpable plugs, four RJ45 keystone jacks and some scrap ethernet cable. In addition to this you'll also need the following tools to make assembling the splitter possible. One RJ45 crimp tool, a cutting knife (craft cutting knife is recommended), a 110 punch down tool and some super glue. That's everything you will need and once you have that you can start assembling it all together.

The first step is to crimp the RJ45 plug onto the ethernet cable. Wire 1 needs to be matched to white and orange. Wire 2 is matched to just orange. Wire 3 is matched to white and green. Wire 4 is matched just to blue. Wire 5 is matched to white and blue. Wire 6 is matched to green. Wire 7 is matched to white and brown. Wire 8 is matched to brown. Once you've done that, the next step is to cut off the other end of the scrap ethernet cable, about 9 inches, and punch down the four pairs of RJ45 keystone jacks. The wiring for the jacks should be as follows:

Jack #1:
1 White/Orange to pin 1keystone jack
2 Orange to pin 2 keystone jack
3 White/Green to pin 3 keystone jack
6 Green to pin 6 keystone jack

Jack #2:
4 Blue to pin 2 keystone jack
5 White/Blue to pin 1 keystone jack
7 White/Brown to pin 3 keystone jack
8 Brown to pin 6 keystone jack

You are almost done. The next step is to super glue the keystone jacks together and then you are done. Since splitters need to be used in pairs, you will need to make a total of two of these. Simply repeat the steps above to make a second ethernet splitter.

Splitters can be used anywhere that you need to connect two networks together. Network here could mean computers or hubs and switches. It isn't important, what is important is that you setup the splitters in pairs. Since splitters force two lanes of LAN traffic down one LAN cable, you need one splitter on one end to funnel the traffic into the single lane and then another splitter on the other end to separate the traffic as it comes out. IF you use just a single splitter, what you will find is that no data can be sent or received along your cable, because there is no separation of the traffic being done on both ends.

SBG6580 Cable Modem - Four in One Device For High-Bandwidth Wireless Network

Wireless networks have become hugely popular in companies as well as in the homes. The beauty of all wireless networks is the lack of wires - no cables are required, no hassle of running the network cables. Home users with lack of networking knowledge can now build a wireless network in home easily with all-in-one SBG6580 cable modem router.

Basically when you build a wireless network to share your Cable broadband internet connection with multiple computers in home securely, you require three devices. Firstly, you need a cable modem. A modem is used to covert analog signal to digital signal and vice versa. Secondly, you need a router with firewall feature. A Router (with firewall feature) is used to help your private network protected against any types of internet threats. Besides, firewall with NAT function is used to allow a single internet connection to share with multiple computers in the network. And lastly you need a wireless access point to extend the network wirelessly.

Building a wireless network with three devices by mostly home users who lack of networking knowledge will sound complicated. Fortunately technology innovations make life easier. Motorola ships a compact device - an all-in-one device which combines all the requirements in building the wireless network in home with no hassle, SBG6580 cable modem router.

What this Product Does

SURFboard SBG6580 is a fully integrated all-in-one cable modem router, a single device for your home wireless network solution to share your Cable Internet connection. Not just that, with a wireless network in home you can share documents, share multifunction printer (with wireless print server), play games, and make Internet phone calls.

Cable Modem Function

SBG6580 is a DOCSIS 3.0 / EuroDOCSIS 3.o cable modem, enables channel bonding of up to 8 downstream and 4 upstream channels - which allows an operator to offer their customers advanced multimedia services, capable of data rates of well over 300 Mbps in DOCSIS and 400 Mbps in EuroDOCSIS in the received (downstream) data stream and over 100 Mbps in the send (upstream) data stream. This is the first requirement for your network.

Firewall & Router Function

SBG6580 cable modem router supports the NAT firewall feature to allow network IP address translation, means you can share a single Internet connection with many computers in the network behind the firewall. The modem also supports the Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) feature for inbound traffic filter in protecting your network against any internet threats such as DoS (Denial of Services) and malware. The modem also supports the routing function including static route and dynamic routing (RIPv1, RIPv2). This is the second requirement for your network.

Wireless Access Point

SBG6580 cable modem wireless router is powered by the wireless access point with the latest wireless technology 802.11n standards with dual selectable frequency band (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) and with an internal 2 x 2 antenna array, enables users to maximize the high-bandwidth potential of their home or business networks. Besides the wireless access, the users can also utilize the included 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports for high speed wired connections to the computers. This is your third requirement for your wireless network in home.

The modem also includes the DHCP service that is very essential service for networking. With the DHCP service, all the IP configurations of all the computers in the network will be done automatically - reducing the administration overhead.

Unlike wired connection, wireless connection is susceptible for the eavesdropping by the users within the network coverage. Therefore, the SBG6580 supports the wide range of security including WEP-64/128, WPA-PSK, WPA, WPA2, TKIP, AES, 802.1x, 802.11i (pre-authentication). For secure client connection to the network, the device supports user-friendly Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS) to easily connect with WPS compatible device

The modem also supports the VPN feature to allow you create secure tunneling into your private network via the public network (aka the internet). Travelling users can access the private network via the internet from all over the world securely with L2TP.

The SBG6580 includes an enhanced tuner that supports up to a 1 GHz downstream input allowing operators to increase the frequency spectrum for deployment of new high-value services such as bandwidth on-demand, commercial services, interactive gaming, and IPTV to their customers.

Ethernet Cable Splitter - Sharing an Internet Connection the Correct Way With a Router

The majority of homes and households around the world today use either a cable modem or some similar kind of broadband internet connection. Most houses usually have multiple computers but only one internet connection. Using the right hardware it is very easy to share or split an internet connection and share it amongst a number of computers. One such device that makes this possible is an ethernet cable splitter. This is a generic term that is applied to a variety of hardware that makes connection sharing possible. Read on to discover a common computer setup that could benefit from an ethernet splitter and the difference between this and other hardware such as hubs and switches.

Homes, offices and universities all usually have one or just a few internet connections. The truth is that if every computer on the planet had its own internet connection, the internet wouldn't work. The internet uses IPs to locate and identify computers and there currently are not enough IPs to go around if every computer connected at once. This is where ethernet splitters come in. Using a splitter you are able to connect multiple computers to just one connection. This is possible because the cable splitter actually connects to the internet itself and then it simply shares or grants access to any computer that connects to it. This means that the computers aren't directly connected to the internet, instead they go through and use the connection the ethernet splitter has created. This means an almost unlimited number of computers can use a single connection, but one down side is that the computers will all usually have the same IP. This is a small price to pay for the convenience such a device offers.

So what's the different between a cable splitter to share an internet connection and other devices like hubs and switches? Hubs and switches are not capable of sharing an internet connection; instead they are used for connecting networks or LAN's together and making communication between the two possible. LAN's commonly exist in offices and homes and allow multiple computers to share files and even printers. However, they can't share a single web connection with computers on the LAN. What they can do is connect computers together and then allow them to connect to a cable splitter which then passes the internet connection back through the hub or switch to all the computers on the LAN.

If you still aren't sure about what the difference between an ethernet cable splitter and hubs or switches is then just remember if you want to share the internet you need a cable splitter. Another common name for these splitters is a router, and using a router is the only way you can share an internet connection. The next time you visit your computer store, just tell the sales person you are looking for a router to share an internet connection with and they'll be able to point you in the right direction. Hubs and switches are for internal networks and not internet sharing. These devices are more suitable to sharing files, printers and other things in a local network and you commonly find them in offices, schools and some homes.
